The Rocky Shoals Spider Lily peaks from mid-May to June, while other wildflowers begin blooming in early spring, with the most vibrant displays by late April. For the best experience, visit in the morning or early evening when lighting is ideal for photography and wildlife activity is high.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park (North Carolina)

Blue Ridge Parkway

Spanning two states, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a wildflower paradise, offering stunning floral displays from early spring through fall. This scenic drive winds through diverse landscapes, from meadows to mountain peaks, creating ideal conditions for hundreds of plant species. 

In early spring, the forest floor comes alive with Chickweed, Wild Ginger, Liverleaf, Toothwort, Spring Beauty, Trout Lily, Trillium, Larkspur, Foamflower, and Jack-in-the-Pulpit. As the season progresses, showy flowers like Turk’s Cap Lily, Meadow Rue, Evening Primrose, Bellflower, Bee Balm, Impatiens, and Turtlehead take center stage. 

For the best spring blooms, visit from March to early May, but wildflowers continue to emerge through summer and fall, making it a year-round spectacle.

Stop to smell the flowers while driving the Blue Ridge Parkway

Landsford Canal State Park (South Carolina)

Nestled along the Catawba River, Landsford Canal State Park blends history and nature. The park is home to the largest known stand of Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies, a rare flower that transforms the river into a sea of white each spring. The park also preserves remnants of an early 1800s canal system, adding a historical touch to any visit.

The Rocky Shoals Spider Lily is the park’s star, peaking between mid-May and mid-June. Other wildflowers, including Trout Lily, Spring Beauty, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Cranefly Orchid, and Columbine, add color throughout the year. 

For the most spectacular sight, visit mid-May to mid-June when Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies are in bloom. 

Pisgah National Forest (North Carolina)

Covering 500,000 acres, Pisgah National Forest is a haven for wildflower lovers. Its diverse elevations—ranging from lush valleys to misty ridges—create ideal conditions for an ever-changing floral display. 

Springtime brings an explosion of wildflowers, with Trilliums, Bloodroots, Spring Beauties, and Hepaticas carpeting the forest floor in soft pastel hues. Bright Trout Lilies add a cheerful touch, while Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and Mountain Laurels bloom in pink, purple, and white later in the season. Summer brings Coneflowers, Black-eyed Susans, and Wild Bergamot, ensuring a continuous floral display.

For the widest variety of blooms, visit between April and early June, when the forest is most vibrant.
