If you're looking for the ultimate thrill, it's time to try hang gliding
Ever wondered what it feels like to fly? At Thermal Valley Hang Gliding in Lenoir, North Carolina, you can turn that dream into a reality. Nestled between the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains and the charming town of Morganton, this family-owned operation offers a heart-pounding, unforgettable adventure in the skies.
Your First Flight: Tandem Hang Gliding
Thermal Valley’s Discovery Tandem Flights are the perfect way to dip your toes into the world of free flight. After a brief ground school and safety check, you’ll be suited up in a secure harness and paired with a USHPA-certified instructor. Then, it’s liftoff — as a Dragonfly tug plane tows you smoothly into the open sky.
At 1,500 feet, the towline releases, and silence sets in. You're gliding. Free-flying like a hawk on the breeze. Flights last 8 to 12 minutes, with optional altitude upgrades that extend your sky time. Feeling brave? Ask your instructor for some advanced maneuvers to spice things up.
Training for the Long Haul
Want more than just a thrill ride? Thermal Valley also offers solo hang gliding instruction, from beginner foot launches to advanced aero-tow training. With access to multiple launch sites and a dedicated training hill at Butte Mountain, students receive hands-on, personalized instruction every step of the way. All equipment is included — just bring your sense of adventure.
Whether you're checking an item off your bucket list or beginning your journey into the sport of free flight, Thermal Valley Hang Gliding is your launchpad. For more information visit thermalvalley.net.
