Our journey begins on the scenic US Highway 21 out of Elkin, winding through the bucolic countryside of North Carolina. As we approach Stone Mountain State Park, the landscape transforms, giving way to rugged terrain and glimpses of towering granite peaks. The anticipation builds as we prepare to embark on our adventure. Along the way, we entertain ourselves by counting cows and holding our breath as we pass by old cemeteries, adding a touch of whimsy to the journey.

The History and Geology of Stone Mountain
Stone Mountain, NC, a massive granite dome rising 600 feet above the surrounding landscape, is a geological marvel millions of years in the making. Hiking Stone Mountain
Our hiking crew, a diverse mix of ages and backgrounds, sets out on the Stone Mountain Loop Trail, eager to explore the park's natural wonders. We start our trek at the Upper Trailhead Parking, opting for a shorter hike due to time constraints. The trail's initial stretch offers minimal shade, but as we ascend, the canopy envelops us, providing respite from the sun. Our journey is punctuated by encounters with downed trees, weathered pits in the stone resembling tide pools, and the occasional wildlife sighting—a fleeting moment with a curious fawn leaves an indelible impression on us.
Stone Mountain Loop Trail
As we tackled the Stone Mountain Loop Trail, my daughter, the unstoppable force of nature that she is, charged up the trail with the enthusiasm of a puppy chasing a squirrel. With each step, her boundless energy seemed to defy gravity, propelling her forward with the determination of a marathon runner on a mission. Meanwhile, my son and I protested, “it’s not a race!” Her smirk, visible from miles away, served as a constant reminder that youth and athleticism were firmly on her side. Oh, to have the boundless energy of a teenager and year-round swimmer!
From the parking lot, you'll hike up (or gain) about 600 feet to reach the summit of Stone Mountain. Fortunately returning to your car is all downhill.
The summit
As we reached the summit of Stone Mountain, NC, a collective sigh of relief echoed among my crew. While my kids bounded off to explore the rocky terrain with the agility of mountain goats, I was left embracing my role as the quintessential Dad. With a blend of pride and caution, I turned into a broken record with constant reminders of “watch your step” and “that’s far enough.” After we snapped obligatory family photos against the backdrop of Blue Ridge vistas, we tried a few crazy photos to make our adventure appear more intense and thrilling.

Our adventure extended beyond the park as we ventured into the nearby town of Elkin. This charming town on a bluff overlooking the Yadkin River captivates with its quaint Main St. We stopped for lunch at the Liberty Restaurant, where we indulged in fried chicken, burgers and fries and reflected on day’s excitement. Later, we satisfied our sweet tooth at Creamy Dayz, housed within the River & Trails Emporium, where oversized scoops of ice cream and indoor cornhole provided the perfect post-hike treat.
