The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, a one-of-a-kind experience, is now open in Historic Downtown Wilson.
What are whirligigs?
The whirligigs are feats of engineering and wondrous artworks created by Vollis Simpson, a retired farm machinery repairman. Simpson used salvaged parts to create windmills designed with colorful reflectors and constructed of salvaged parts.
Simpson originally installed his whirligigs along the road outside of Wilson. As the story spread his farm became one of Wilson’s top tourist destinations.
Simpson continued to build his whirligigs until shortly before his death at age 94.
What’s at the Whirligig Park?
The Whirligig Park will feature 30 of the handmade whirligigs, some 50 feet tall or more. A visit to the park offers fascinating artistic, educational and recreational opportunities.
