Great Adventures for Kids of All Ages in Gaston County
When the summer sun starts to sizzle, Gaston County offers a refreshing escape filled with river breezes, shady trails, and small-town charm. Just west of Charlotte, it's the perfect place to trade screen time for outdoor fun—exploring nature, enjoying a family-friendly ball game, or savoring homemade ice cream. This four-day itinerary is packed with adventures that everyone can enjoy, from relaxed nature walks to local treats.
Day 1: Dinosaurs, Gemstones, and Baseball
Kick off your adventure in Gastonia at the Schiele Museum of Natural History, where kids can roam among dinosaurs, journey through the stars in the planetarium, and explore the wonders of the natural world. Just outside, visit The Farm, where kids can experience farm life firsthand and meet friendly goats, pigs, and more.
You'll have a “pterrific ptime” at the Schiele Museum!
Don’t miss the gem mining experience during your summer visits to the museum, at the historic grist mill along the shaded Nature Trail. Young explorers can pan for colorful gems and keep their sparkly discoveries as a fun reminder of the day.
After your adventure at the museum, cool down at the splash pad at Lineberger Park, just down the street. Let the little ones enjoy the water and playground before heading to Tony's Ice Cream for a sweet treat. Whether it's a milkshake, a classic cone, or the famous grape ice cream, Tony's is a beloved local spot that's been serving up delicious ice cream for generations.
Come evening, head to downtown Gastonia for dinner. Try Pita Wheel, a casual, funky spot housed in a converted gas station, or book a table at Webb Custom Kitchen, which serves modern American fare inside a restored Art Deco theater. After dinner, walk over to CaroMont Health Park to cheer on the Gastonia Ghost Peppers baseball team. Peppy, the mascot, keeps the kids entertained, and the ballpark's play area means parents can catch a few innings while the kids stay happy.
Day 2: Paddles, Playgrounds, and Riverside Treats
Spend a day along the scenic South Fork River with a mix of outdoor adventure, small-town charm, and riverside relaxation. Start your morning in McAdenville with a breakfast sandwich and fresh coffee from Spruced Goose Station, a cozy spot to fuel up before hitting the water.

Enjoy kayaking on Gaston County's beautiful rivers!
Your water adventure starts at the Boathouse, for a family-friendly paddle. No experience necessary—the calm waters are perfect for beginners, and you might catch glimpses of turtles, herons, and other local wildlife along the way. After your paddle, reward yourselves with a quick stop at Life is Sweet Candy Shop for a treat, or find a unique memento at Mona's Boutique and Gifts.
Next, go to Goat Island Park for even more riverfront fun. Grab a picnic lunch from Floyd and Blackies, then cross the pedestrian bridge to the island and enjoy the shaded trails, playground, and fishing pier. Adirondack chairs invite you to sit back, take in the peaceful setting, and spot a few more birds along the way. End your day at Confluence, a riverside taproom operated by the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. Relax with a local brew, enjoy live music, and learn a little more about the river you've been exploring all day.

Start your day with a visit to the Stowe Conservancy in Belmont—formerly known as Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. The vibrant gardens you've always loved are still in bloom, but now there's even more to explore. Stroll scenic trails, grab a coffee at the new café, or browse the garden center for something special to take home.

For families, the big news is the Lost Hollow expansion, opening in June 2025. This magical addition adds nearly nine acres of play, including a half-mile Adventure Trail through the woods. Along the way, kids can discover five nature-themed “rooms” with hands-on features, ending at the Prairie Castle Playground—a three-story, medieval-inspired fortress designed to spark the imagination.
After the garden, explore downtown Belmont, where you'll find plenty of local shops and places to eat—we recommend Nellie's Southern Kitchen for a taste of Southern comfort.
Later, head to Tuckaseege Park in Mount Holly for a peaceful riverside walk along the banks of the Catawba. Wrap up the day with dinner at JR Cash's Grill & Bar, where riverside dining offers front-row views of the Catawba River and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
Day 4: Crowders Mountain and Wine with a View
On your final morning, head to Crowders Mountain State Park. Choose from easy walks or more challenging climbs—either way, you'll be rewarded with gorgeous views. You can also enjoy fishing and paddling on the lake. Shaded picnic areas are available if you're looking for a peaceful break surrounded by nature.
