Whether you’re hosting friends and family or using the rest of your annual vacation time, taking a holi(day) trip to these iconic holiday destinations in the Carolinas promises all our favorite Christmas trappings, including tasty treats, fantastic light displays, and engaging encounters with history.
1. New Bern
Candle lights and carriage rides
NC Coast
Your day trip to New Bern should begin with a visit to Tryon Palace, the crown jewel of the town’s historical sites. Not only is the former North Carolina capitol and governor’s mansion an immersive walk through time – during the holidays, it’s a feast for the eyes. The Candlelight Christmas Celebration is the premiere annual holiday event at Tryon Palace, taking place on December 14 and 21, 2024, from 4:30–9:30 PM. Gaze in astonishment at the resplendent glow of the candlelit Governor’s Mansion and, as you move from one adorned room to another, hear costumed narrators perform an engaging tale of the palace’s colonial origins.
Share your favorite moments from your morning visit to Tryon Palace at Baker’s Kitchen, beloved for its unfussy, all-day breakfast service. We could gaze at the Christmas cookies, pies, and cheesecakes in their Middle Street display for hours. Check off holiday shopping perusing boutiques like the Black Cat Shoppe and Surf Wind and Fire.
Thinking of staying the night? Now that’s a decision Santa can get behind. Union Point Park is a beautiful setting for a golden hour walk before enjoying a waterfront dinner at Persimmon. You can go ice skating at Union Point Park from Thanksgiving through December 31. “Beary Merry” horse-drawn carriage rides are also available from Union Point Park on select December evenings, taking riders through the brightly decorated streets of historic New Bern.
2. Greenwood
Forge your own adventure
SC Upstate
With quaint holiday experiences and delicious Southern cuisine, Greenwood offers a perfect blend of small-town charm and seasonal joy for families. Begin your Greenwood, SC, day trip downtown at The Museum and Railroad Historical Center. This local gem offers a deep dive into the history of Greenwood and the surrounding area, with a special focus on the region’s railroad heritage. The Railroad Center features restored train cars, including a steam locomotive and caboose, that you can tour.
By midday, you’ll be ready to refuel, and Good Times Brewing at The Mill House is the perfect spot. This local favorite is known for its wood-fired pizzas, craft beers, and laid-back atmosphere. For a unique afternoon experience, take a short drive to Old Pope Farm & Forge, where you can participate in a blacksmithing workshop. This hands-on activity is not only educational but also incredibly fun.
If you prefer to stay in Greenwood, there are plenty of holiday events to enjoy. On December 8, 2024, at 2:30 PM, the town hosts its annual Greenwood Christmas Parade, a beloved event that features floats, marching bands, and, of course, Santa Claus. The theme this year challenges floats to recreate iconic Christmas movie scenes.
