Black Bear Festival
📍 Plymouth | June 6-7, 2026 | Historic Waterfront

Founded in Plymouth, North Carolina—considered the epicenter of the black bear world—the Black Bear Festival celebrates a region known for hosting the largest black bears on the planet, the highest black bear densities, and the best public bear viewing in the state. These coastal giants thrive here thanks to abundant high-protein crops, mild winters, exceptional habitat, and unique genetics.

Held annually along Plymouth’s historic waterfront on the banks of the Roanoke River, often called “North Carolina’s Amazon,” the award-winning Black Bear Festival combines wildlife education with large-scale entertainment. The result is a distinctive blend of a bear festival and a river festival, offering experiences on land, water, and in the air. Organizers continually refresh the event each year, adding new attractions and surprises to keep the festival engaging for returning visitors.

Festival experiences include aerial demonstrations and helicopter rides, highlighted by performances from the U.S. Army Golden Knights. On the water, attendees can enjoy pontoon boat rides, paddlewheel cruises, cat boat tours, and lazy river tubing along the Roanoke River. The day concludes with the Reflections on the Roanoke fireworks show, a signature finale set over the river.

Bear-focused programming is central to the festival and includes guided Wild Bear Tours, the Black Bear Theater, the Bear-Ology Museum, a children’s Bear Train Ride, and the popular foot race, “Can You Outrun a Black Bear?” Educational presentations are led by a Black Bear Biologist, and guests can learn wildlife photography techniques during black bear photo sessions with Mark Buckler.

In 2026, the Black Bear Festival will also celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, adding patriotic elements to an already packed schedule of events. With its rare combination of wildlife, river activities, education, and entertainment, the Black Bear Festival offers a full day of experiences for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and festivalgoers alike.
