North Carolina marks a milestone moment in American history with Prelude to Revolution: Halifax Resolves Days, a three-day immersive celebration honoring the 250th anniversary of the Halifax Resolves. Held throughout the historic district of Halifax, the event brings the Revolutionary era to life with living history, hands-on demonstrations, music, ceremonies, and special performances.
The weekend also celebrates the public reopening of the newly renovated visitor center at Historic Halifax State Historic Site, unveiling a modern facility and a brand-new exhibit highlighting Halifax’s pivotal role in America’s path to independence.
What to Expect
- Living history vignettes reenacting the Provincial Congress debates
- Lectures, historic trades, and weapons demonstrations
- Colonial music and performances by the Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps
- Ceremony at Magazine Spring led by the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe
- Annual Halifax Resolves Day Ceremony at the colonial courthouse site
- Food trucks, vendors, exhibits, tours, and themed photo booths
- Entertainment on King Street, plus a live music finale and drone show after dark (sponsored by the Town of Halifax)

Activities take place across the historic area of Halifax. Attendees are encouraged to check the event website ahead of time for street closures, shuttle routes, parking details, a full schedule, and a site map. Printed maps and daily programming info will also be available at the Halifax Visitor Center, 25 St. David St.
Why It Matters
In April 1776, delegates meeting in Halifax unanimously adopted the Halifax Resolves—the first official action by any of the 13 colonies calling for independence from Great Britain. This bold stand helped pave the way for the Declaration of Independence just months later.
